This is an exceptionally rare signed photographic portrait of Ernst I, Duke of Saxe-Altenburg (1826–1908), who reigned from 1853 until his death in 1908. The photograph depicts the Duke in full dress uniform, wearing epaulettes and an impressive medal bar with multiple Prussian and Saxon decorations. Notably visible is the Order of the White Falcon, among others, testifying to his long service and high status within Imperial Germany’s network of duchies.
The portrait is mounted in its original leather-covered frame, which is surmounted by a finely detailed gilt crown of the Duchy of Saxe-Altenburg—a rare and distinctive embellishment marking its noble provenance. The frame retains its period backing and floral-patterned interior lining.
At the bottom of the portrait is the Duke’s autograph, clearly visible in pencil/ink. This signed example is particularly desirable, as Ernst I was a long-reigning duke who witnessed the dramatic changes in German politics, including unification under Prussia in 1871 and the establishment of the German Empire.
Historical Context:
Ernst I belonged to the Ernestine line of Saxon dukes and was a prominent supporter of conservative monarchical authority during the 19th century. His reign covered both the Austro-Prussian War (1866)—when Altenburg sided with Austria—and the subsequent incorporation of his duchy into the Prussian-dominated German Empire after victory in the Franco-Prussian War (1870–71). He remained a respected figurehead until his death in 1908, after which his brother, Duke Ernst II, succeeded him.
Condition:
The photograph remains clear and well-preserved, showing fine detail in the Duke’s facial features and decorations. The frame shows moderate age wear, with scuffs to the leather and minor edge losses but remains structurally sound. The gilt crown retains excellent detail and luster. The autograph is crisp and entirely legible.
Dimensions: Approximately 6 x 8 in. with frame.
Collector’s Note:
Signed portraits of reigning German dukes in original presentation frames are scarce, particularly those enhanced with dynastic symbols such as the crown of Saxe-Altenburg. This example is further elevated by the Duke’s autograph and high-quality preserved state.
