This original Friedrich August Medal (Friedrich August-Medaille) was awarded by the Kingdom of Saxony and dates from the reign of King Friedrich August III, the last monarch of Saxony who ruled until 1918.
The obverse features a finely detailed crowned monogram “A”, encircled by laurel and oak leaf wreaths tied with a bow at the base—symbols of merit, loyalty, and military virtue. The crown atop the monogram confirms royal issuance.
The reverse bears the clearly legible inscription:
"Friedrich August-Medaille", surrounded by decorative scrollwork and stylized leaf motifs, characteristic of late Imperial German medallic art.
This medal was typically awarded for military and civil merit during the First World War and earlier, with both bronze and silver versions issued. This example is struck in bronze, showing even patina and light wear consistent with age and handling.
Historical Context:
Instituted in 1905, the Friedrich August Medal was a popular Saxon decoration during World War I, conferred on both military personnel and civilians who contributed to the war effort or civil services. Its simple yet dignified design made it a cherished decoration for loyal service to the Saxon kingdom.
Condition:
Very fine. The medal retains strong relief on both obverse and reverse, with only minor wear along the edges and loop. No ribbon present.
Collector's Note:
A desirable and accessible Imperial-era piece from Saxony, especially appealing to collectors of regional German states, WWI awards, or Saxon royal memorabilia. Pairs nicely with Saxon war merit crosses or orders bearing the Friedrich August monogram.
Display Suggestion:
Ideal for framed medal groups or Saxon service medal bars. A suitable addition to any WWI or German state decorations display.
