This is a stunning early 19th-century commemorative token celebrating the military achievements of Lieutenant General Marquis Wellington (later Duke of Wellington) during the Peninsular War (1808–1814). The token was struck to honor his decisive victories in the Iberian Peninsula, which significantly contributed to the defeat of Napoleon’s forces in Europe.

Obverse:

  • Features a finely detailed profile bust of Lieutenant General Marquis Wellington.
  • The inscription reads “LIEUT. GEN. MARQUIS WELLINGTON K.B.”, denoting his title as Knight of the Order of the Bath (K.B.).
  • At the bottom, the year MDCCCXII (1812) is prominently displayed, marking the height of his successful campaigns.

Reverse:

  • The reverse depicts a classical-style monument or pedestal adorned with the Union Jack shield, surrounded by military symbols such as cannons, flags, and laurel wreaths—a testament to Wellington's strategic prowess and military victories.
  • Below the pedestal are listed significant battles from the Peninsular War:
    • Vittoria
    • Talavera
    • Badajoz
    • Ciudad Rodrigo
    • Salamanca
  • The top inscription reads “ENTERED MADRID AUGUST XII”, referencing the Allied forces’ triumphal entry into Madrid on August 12, 1812, following the Battle of Salamanca.

Dimensions:

  • Diameter: Approximately 35mm.
  • Composition: Likely struck in white metal or similar alloy, consistent with early 19th-century commemorative tokens.
  • Edge: Smooth.

Condition:

  • The token displays moderate wear, consistent with its age, particularly on the high-relief areas such as the bust and text.
  • Some oxidation and tarnishing are visible, especially on the reverse, adding to its authenticity and historical charm.
  • Despite surface wear, the fine detailing of the design, especially on Wellington’s profile and the battle names, remains sharp and legible.

Historical Context: This token commemorates one of Wellington’s most successful years during the Peninsular War. His victories at Salamanca, Ciudad Rodrigo, and Badajoz turned the tide of the conflict, liberating large parts of Spain from French control. His triumphal entry into Madrid on August 12, 1812, was a symbolic moment in the war, solidifying his reputation as one of Britain’s greatest military leaders.

These tokens were often created as patriotic memorabilia, celebrating the heroism of military leaders and significant national achievements.

Value and Collectability:

  • Similar commemorative tokens from this period are highly sought after by collectors of Napoleonic memorabilia and historical numismatics.
  • Tokens in better condition or with clear provenance can fetch prices at the upper end of this range or higher.

This token is not just a piece of numismatic history but also a tangible connection to one of the most significant military campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars. It would make a fine addition to any collection focused on military history, Napoleonic artifacts, or historical tokens.
