This miniature Prinzengroße version of the German Southwest Africa Campaign Medal commemorates service in the 1904–1906 expedition to German Southwest Africa (Deutsch-Südwestafrika, now Namibia). Measuring just over 1 inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, it is struck in silvered bronze and fitted with a small gilded suspension loop bearing an engraved decorative “S” motif—likely a jeweler’s addition for wear as a pendant.
The obverse features the helmeted allegorical figure of Germania, wearing a winged crested helmet symbolizing imperial protection and resolve. Around the edge appears the legend “SÜDWEST AFRIKA 1904–06.” The reverse shows the crowned cipher of Kaiser Wilhelm II above crossed sword and laurel branches, encircled by “VERDIENST UM DIE EXPEDITION” (Merit for the Expedition).
This campaign medal was originally awarded to officers, NCOs, and colonial officials who took part in Germany’s Herero and Nama uprisings suppression campaign—the first major overseas conflict of the Imperial German colonial army. Prinzengroße versions such as this were often privately purchased by officers for wear on undress uniforms or as personal keepsakes, reflecting both pride in service and the tradition of fine German medallic craftsmanship.
Condition: Very Good. Light, even toning with sharp detail to both sides and excellent preservation of relief. The gilt suspension bar remains intact and adds visual contrast.
A scarce and appealing Prinzengroße format colonial medal, representing one of Imperial Germany’s earliest and most historically significant overseas campaigns.
