This is an original used postage stamp issued for Deutsch-Ostafrika (German East Africa), bearing the 20 Heller denomination in the bicolor orange-red and black printing of the Kaiser's Yacht series, produced for the territory following the currency reform that introduced the Heller and Rupie system in 1905.
The central vignette depicts the imperial steam yacht Hohenzollern in the same engraved design used across all German colonial territories in the unified series introduced from 1900 onward, with DEUTSCH-OSTAFRIKA arched across the top and the denomination 20 HELLER displayed in the lower banner. The two-color printing — orange-red frame with black central vignette — distinguishes the 1905 Heller currency issue from the earlier Pesa and Anna denominations of the same territory, and represents a more visually striking production than the monochrome values. The 20 Heller denomination corresponded to a standard letter rate within the East African colonial postal system and saw regular use throughout the territory's remaining decade of German administration.
Deutsch-Ostafrika encompassed the territory of present-day Tanzania, Rwanda, and Burundi, and was Germany's most populous and economically significant colonial possession in sub-Saharan Africa. Administered from Dar es Salaam, the territory had been under German control since the late 1880s and developed an extensive postal network serving the administrative centers, military garrisons, plantation districts, and mission stations spread across its vast interior. The territory was lost to British and Belgian forces during the First World War's East African Campaign — the longest and most grueling colonial theater of the war — with German commander Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck's forces conducting a legendary guerrilla campaign that did not surrender until after the Armistice in November 1918. The stamps of Deutsch-Ostafrika are thus artifacts of a colonial infrastructure that ceased to exist within a decade of their production.
The stamp is postally used, with a circular cancellation strike visible across the face. The postmark text is partially legible and appears to read "MOSSO" or similar, consistent with a colonial post office cancellation from within the territory, though full transcription is not possible from the provided images. The two-color impression is clean and well-registered, with the orange-red frame and black vignette in good alignment. Perforations appear intact on all sides, with some minor perf irregularity and light rust spotting at the lower left corner consistent with age and tropical climate storage. The reverse shows a hinge remnant at the upper center, indicating prior album mounting, which is standard for used colonial material of this period.
The bicolor Heller values of Deutsch-Ostafrika are among the more attractive entries in the Kaiser's Yacht colonial series and attract consistent philatelic interest from both German colonial specialists and collectors focused on the East African theater of the First World War. The 20 Heller in the orange and black combination is a visually appealing example of Wilhelmine colonial postal material in a format accessible to collectors at any stage.
