This finely hand-embroidered wartime textile commemorates Germany’s involvement in the First World War, dating from 1914–1917. Worked on a cream woven ground in black, red, and white thread, the design features four Iron Crosses—one in each corner—framing the dates 1914 and 1917, and the crowned imperial cypher “W” for Kaiser Wilhelm II at center.
The embroidery is bordered by a triple frame in the Imperial German national colors (black, white, and red). The detailed needlework includes a crowned monogram rendered in black and pale beige silk thread, reflecting domestic craftsmanship during the wartime years when such patriotic handiwork was common in soldiers’ families and home-front circles. The piece is edged with fine crochet lace, typical of decorative work intended for wall display, cushion cover, or table adornment.
The reverse shows the neat cross-stitch pattern of the embroidery, confirming it as hand-made rather than machine-worked.
Condition: Very Good. The textile remains complete and stable, with mild age toning and light edge fray consistent with its age. Colors are well preserved, and the lace border remains largely intact. No tears or staining noted.
A striking example of Imperial German home-front needlecraft, representing both patriotic devotion and the material culture of the Great War era. Ideal for framing or display alongside Iron Cross or trench art collections.
