This is a fine example of the German Seitengewehr 1898 (S98) bayonet, widely issued during the First World War for use with the Gewehr 98 Mauser rifle. These bayonets are known for their long, slim profile and elegant lines — a design originally conceived when the German military prioritized thrusting capability over chopping power in its edged weapons.

This bayonet measures approximately 27 inches in total length with the scabbard, with a blade length of 20.5 inches. It features classic checkered wooden grips, diagonally grooved for improved handling, and secured with two domed rivets. The hilt fittings are of steel construction, showing oxidation and wear from active service, particularly along the pommel and guard. The left side of the pommel shows remnants of the unit flashguard slot.

The blade remains full-length and straight, with a full-length single fuller and visible edge wear from age and use. The blade retains a portion of its original bright finish, though spots of darkening and pitting are present near the ricasso and tip — consistent with field use and storage over a century.

The included scabbard is the regulation steel-mounted leather type, with both throat and drag intact. The leather body retains its original black finish, though some surface cracking and pressure wear are visible. The metal fittings show oxidation and some rust speckling, but remain structurally sound. The scabbard throat bears no matching serial number to the bayonet — not uncommon, as these were often reissued or replaced in the field.

One side of the bayonet spine bears remnants of a red felt insert in the mortise slot, often an indication of German imperial issue and sometimes associated with guard units or parade-dress configuration, though this detail is no longer definitive without regimental markings.

Historical Context:
The S98 was the primary bayonet for German infantry at the outbreak of WWI. Its distinctive long blade was designed to match the range of foreign counterparts such as the French Lebel bayonets. Over time, shorter and sturdier variants like the S84/98 were introduced, particularly for front-line trench combat. Still, many S98 bayonets remained in service throughout the war and saw continued use in the early Weimar period.

Condition:
Good field-used condition overall. The blade is structurally intact with moderate patina and surface pitting. The hilt shows oxidation and finish loss consistent with combat use. Grips are tight with no major cracks. The scabbard is complete and holds the bayonet securely, though finish wear is evident.
