Offered for sale is a rare 1870 Iron Cross 1st Class with a low vaulted design and side hooks. This private purchase Iron Cross shows a deep patina and quality beading, indicative of its high quality. When examining the reverse side, we see two side hooks, indicating that three sewn in loops would be necessary for proper mounting on a tunic. Additionally, the reverse shows the maker's mark "Godet" and a fine patina.

Accompanied by a black leatherette presentation case, this Iron Cross 1st Class is a unique historical artifact. The outer lid displays a silver outline of an Iron Cross, although the date is obscured. The white silk upper lid shows some light shredding, a common occurrence with silk over time. The bottom of the case is an unusual light blue velvet and has only one central place intended for a conventional Iron Cross pin, which does not fit the side hook design of the Iron Cross. Despite the ill-fitting Iron Cross, the case closes correctly and the snap closure works properly.

This 1870 Iron Cross 1st Class is a rare and valuable item, reflecting the history of Germany during this time period. The Iron Cross was established by King Wilhelm I in 1870, during the Franco-Prussian War, to recognize bravery and outstanding military service. The 1st Class Iron Cross was awarded to those who had already received the 2nd Class Iron Cross and demonstrated continued exceptional service.

This private purchase Iron Cross with its unique low vaulted design and side hooks offers a fascinating glimpse into the personal history of a German soldier during this period. As a consignment item, this Iron Cross 1st Class represents a unique opportunity for collectors and history enthusiasts to own a piece of German military history.
