The translation for Prinzengroße is “Prince sized”. These were private purchase medals including Iron Crosses which became popular during the Napoleonic wars. These were often purchased by royals and nobility but in time became more of an affectation by certain officers who wanted something a bit different. They were not officially recognized or condoned, more just overlooked. They were seen for the Iron Crosses of 1813, 1870, and 1914. As the Iron Cross 1st Class were not awarded in great numbers (The stated amount is 218,000) it can be seen how scarce a 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class Prinzengroße is.

We are really excited about this Iron Cross. In fact we have never seen or been able to offer an example like it. It is a two piece screwback of the 1914 Iron Cross 1st Class. Even the full size screwback Iron Crosses which have one or two backing plates are not common. It is a low vault example. An Iron Cross like this would most likely have been permanently mounted to a tunic as it would be difficult to put it on and off constantly.

The paint on the obverse is excellent and would rate at near 100%. The beading is nicely done. The cross is of three piece construction. The frame has a wonderful patina and the Iron Cross is magnetic.

The reverse also has an interesting patina but is not marked for silver content. The plate which is attached to the cross is circular. This is a unique example of a private purchase Iron Cross. Hallmarked.

It is a consignment item.
