Original German period uniform snap fastener card produced by William Prym of Stolberg, the German metalwares firm founded in Aachen in 1530 and recognized as one of the oldest continuously operating manufacturing businesses in Europe. The card carries six complete snap fasteners of the Strategen-Knopf (Strategist Button) pattern, intended for military and uniform applications, and remains in unused, unissued condition with its original retail packaging entirely intact.
The card itself is heavyweight kraft cardstock with deckle-cut scalloped edges, printed in red and black on a cream ground. The obverse carries the Strategen-Knopf trade name in a bold black banner across the upper field, beneath which the six fasteners are mounted in two rows of three. The technical specifications are printed in red along the edges: Ober- und Unterteile aus rostfreiem Material (upper and lower parts made of rust-free material) and Feder aus Stahl, durch doppelte Metall-Appretur weitgehend gegen Rost geschützt (steel spring, largely protected against corrosion through double metal coating). The reverse carries a manufacturer's announcement reading Die bekannte Druckknopf-Weltmarke "Prym's Zukunft" ist nach Kriegsschluss wieder in anerkannter Ausführung zu beziehen. William Prym. — which translates as "The well-known snap-fastener world-brand 'Prym's Zukunft' is once again available in recognized quality after the conclusion of hostilities. William Prym."
This post-1918 availability message dates the card to the period immediately following the First World War, almost certainly during the early Weimar Republic between approximately 1919 and the mid-1920s. Industrial restrictions during the 1914-1918 period had curtailed civilian production of non-essential consumer goods at Prym; the card explicitly markets the resumption of full-quality production after the cessation of hostilities. Prym's Zukunft (Future) line was the firm's flagship snap-fastener brand, recognized internationally before 1914 and reintroduced under this advertising campaign. The Strategen-Knopf designation denotes the military-pattern variant of the line, distinguished by the rust-resistant construction emphasized prominently on the card.
The William Prym firm itself bears noting. Founded in Aachen in 1530 and continuing in operation today, Prym held a dominant position in the European fastener and metal-goods market throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Their snap fasteners equipped both civilian garments and military uniforms across multiple periods, and surviving original-period packaging from the firm carries documentary as well as collector value.
The fasteners themselves correspond in pattern, size, and blackened finish to the type used on Imperial German military uniforms during the 1914-1918 period and subsequently on early Reichswehr uniforms during the Weimar years. They would have served for replacement or repair work on existing Imperial-pattern garments held in private and surplus stocks, as well as for new uniform construction during the early Weimar period.
Condition is excellent for the type. The card is complete with all six fasteners present and securely mounted, both upper and lower parts visible as advertised. Period toning is present across the cardstock with light scattered foxing and minor edge wear consistent with nearly a century of storage. All printed text on both faces remains fully legible. The fasteners themselves show no visible rust or corrosion, fully consistent with the rust-resistant construction described on the card itself. The piece has been preserved in a protective archival sleeve.
For the collector, intact unused-condition period German uniform fastener cards in original packaging are increasingly scarce, particularly with both technical and historical text legible and complete on both faces. The piece serves equally well as a functional reference for uniform restoration projects and as a documentary artifact of early Weimar German consumer manufacturing recovery. Original Prym packaging from this transitional period rarely surfaces with this level of completeness, and the Strategen-Knopf military-pattern designation makes it a particularly relevant reference piece for serious Imperial German uniform collectors and reenactors working at a high level of period accuracy.
