Historical Relevance
The Hamburg Hanseatic Cross was established on September 10, 1915, as Hamburg’s official wartime bravery and merit decoration during World War I. It was modeled after the Iron Cross and awarded to soldiers, officers, and individuals who demonstrated exceptional service in support of the German war effort.
Hamburg was one of three Hanseatic cities (along with Bremen and Lübeck) that issued a Hanseatic Cross. While similar in design, each city’s award bore its own unique emblem in the center. The Hamburg version is distinguished by the iconic castle with three towers, which represents the city’s centuries-old fortifications and independence as a historic trade hub.
