This remarkable Austro-Hungarian relic from the late 19th to early 20th century presents a powerful and visually arresting carved wood frame centered around the enduring image of Emperor Franz Joseph I (r. 1848–1916). Dominating the form is the Austrian Imperial double-headed eagle, one of the most recognizable symbols of the Habsburg monarchy. Each head is surmounted by an imperial crown, while a third, larger crown unites the two at the apex—representing the unity of Austria and Hungary under the emperor.
The frame features deeply cut wings extending outward, flanking a centrally positioned period photographic portrait of Franz Joseph, complete with military regalia and medals. Above the image, the phrase “LONG LIVE” is carved in English with a central star between the words—likely added for the export market or as a patriotic sentiment for ethnic German populations abroad.
In the eagle’s right talon, a fully modeled sword symbolizes Imperial military strength and justice. In its left, it holds the globus cruciger (orb and cross)—a potent symbol of Christian monarchy and divine authority. Surrounding the portrait is a border of oak leaves and medals, including several stylized representations of the Austrian Bravery Medal and other campaign crosses. On the reverse, an early hanging wire appears to be original to the piece, and the carved contours continue in full dimension.
