This original Imperial German portrait postcard depicts Herzog Ernst August von Braunschweig, Duke Ernst August of Brunswick, in formal military uniform. A member of the House of Hanover and one of the most important dynastic figures of the final years of the Kaiserreich, Ernst August became the last reigning Duke of Brunswick and was closely connected to the Imperial House through his marriage to Kaiser Wilhelm II’s only daughter, Viktoria Luise of Prussia.

The finely rendered portrait shows Ernst August in a high-collared military tunic with braided shoulder insignia and a prominent breast decoration. Beneath the portrait appears a printed facsimile of his signature, “Ernst August.” This signature is part of the original printed design and should not be confused with a hand-signed autograph.

The reverse identifies the subject as:
“HERZOG ERNST AUGUST VON BRAUNSCHWEIG”

This translates as:
“Duke Ernst August of Brunswick.”

The postcard was published by:
“Stengel & Co., G.m.b.H., Dresden”
and carries publisher number “49162.” Stengel & Co. was among the major German postcard publishers of the late Imperial period and produced extensive series depicting royalty, military personalities, political figures, and prominent events.

Ernst August Christian Georg of Hanover was born in 1887, a great-grandson of King George III of Great Britain through the Hanoverian royal line. His family had lost the Kingdom of Hanover following Prussia’s annexation of the state in 1866, leaving a long-running political and dynastic dispute between the House of Hanover and the ruling Hohenzollern monarchy of Prussia.

That division was dramatically softened in 1913 when Ernst August married Princess Viktoria Luise of Prussia, the only daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II and Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria. The wedding became one of the great dynastic gatherings of prewar Europe and symbolized a reconciliation between the Houses of Hanover and Hohenzollern. Later that year, Ernst August was permitted to assume the throne of the Duchy of Brunswick.

As Herzog von Braunschweig, Ernst August reigned from 1913 until the German Revolution of November 1918 brought the monarchies of the individual German states to an end. His reign therefore spans virtually the entire period of the First World War, giving postcards portraying him as reigning duke a particularly strong connection to the final chapter of Imperial German royal history.

The portrait format of this card reflects the enormous popularity of royal personality postcards in the years immediately before and during the First World War. Images of the Kaiser, Crown Prince, German kings, grand dukes, princes, and senior military commanders circulated widely as inexpensive collectibles and as tangible expressions of dynastic and patriotic interest.

The reverse is unused and retains its original divided-back postcard format with printed address lines and stamp box. No postal stamp, cancellation, or handwritten correspondence is present.

Condition is very good overall. The portrait remains sharp and exceptionally clear with strong tonal detail. The card shows light age toning, minor scattered spotting, and modest edge and corner wear consistent with period storage. The reverse remains clean and fully legible.

This is an attractive Imperial German royal portrait card with particular appeal for collectors of the Duchy of Brunswick, the House of Hanover, Kaiser Wilhelm II and his extended family, Viktoria Luise of Prussia, and German royal memorabilia from the final years of the Kaiserreich.
