Offered here is a striking Knight’s Cross of the Ludwig Order (Ludwigsorden) from the Grand Duchy of Hesse, complete with its silver crown suspension and vibrant blue enamel medallions. This elegant decoration, established in 1807, was awarded for civil and military merit and became one of the most respected regional honors within the German Confederation.

The cross features a beautifully preserved crowned bust of Grand Duke Ludwig, surrounded by the Latin inscription: “VIRTUTI ET FIDELITER” ("For Virtue and Loyalty"). The reverse medallion shows the lion of Hesse within the order’s name and title: “LUDOVICUS III MAGN. DUX HASSIAE PR. HESS.”

Key details include:

  • Silver construction with finely hand-chased detail

  • Deep red ribbon with white edge stripes, original and clean

  • Ornate openwork crown suspension, solidly affixed

  • Blue enamel intact on both obverse and reverse

  • Crisp mottoes and portraits with minimal wear

  • Approximate measurements: 41mm wide x 88mm tall (with crown and ribbon)

Condition:
Excellent overall with age-appropriate patina. Minor edge wear but no enamel loss or structural damage. Original ribbon present and vibrant.

Historical Note:
The Ludwig Order was often granted to both Hessian and Prussian officers and civil officials for exemplary service. This crowned version signified an elevation in class, often reserved for senior officers or nobility. Its motto and finely rendered design reflect the classical virtues admired in 19th-century German principalities.

Collector Appeal:
Highly sought after by collectors of Imperial German orders, this piece offers a strong visual presence, noble provenance, and historical value. Suitable for display alongside other state and military decorations or as a centerpiece in a Grand Duchy of Hesse collection.
