This is a finely crafted Imperial German patriotic pin from World War I, featuring a cutout design with the 1915 Iron Cross at its center. Pieces such as this were privately purchased and proudly worn by soldiers’ families, supporters, and veterans as a visible sign of loyalty and sacrifice during the war.

The obverse displays a gilt Iron Cross with the crowned “W” cypher and date “1915,” framed by a circular black enamel border decorated with small silvered dots. The cutout style allows the cross to stand out boldly against the wearer’s clothing, giving it a striking three-dimensional effect. The enamel remains in very good condition, with only minor age-related wear visible under close inspection.

The reverse shows a simple flat backing with its original horizontal pin and catch still intact, a testament to its originality.

Historical Context:
Patriotic pins like this became widespread during WWI, sold commercially as a way for civilians to show solidarity with soldiers at the front. The Iron Cross, reauthorized in 1914 by Kaiser Wilhelm II, quickly became the most recognized German military decoration. This 1915-dated example represents the continuation of a tradition that began in 1813 during the Napoleonic Wars.

Condition:

  • Obverse: Excellent enamel detail with only light wear.

  • Reverse: Original pin and catch intact, showing normal patina.

  • Dimensions: Approximately 22 mm in diameter.

A classic and very collectible piece of Imperial German patriotic jewelry, ideal for both militaria and decorative arts collections.
