This is a fine example of a privately purchased brass pocket compass dating to the late 19th–early 20th century, almost certainly of German manufacture. Compasses of this type were carried by officers, explorers, and well-equipped travelers, prized for their utility as much as their presentation.

The instrument features a circular brass case measuring approx. 50 mm in diameter with a hinged cover, giving the appearance of a pocket watch when closed. The cover is plain, showing age patina, scratches, and some surface oxidation consistent with decades of use and handling. Inside, the compass face is well preserved, printed with bold cardinal and intercardinal points, degree gradations, and the word “Germany” at the base, confirming manufacture origin. The black needle remains intact and is responsive, pivoting correctly when in use.

The cover interior retains a fine radial brushed finish, a typical embellishment of quality pocket compasses. The compass is suspended from its original brass ring and is accompanied by a later but serviceable chain with spring clasp, allowing wear or display.

Condition:

  • Exterior brass case shows wear, surface scratches, and light corrosion spots from age.

  • Interior compass dial clear and legible, needle functional.

  • Hinge intact, cover opens and closes smoothly.

  • Chain a later addition but complements the piece for display.

Historical Context:
Such compasses were favored by German officers in both field and naval service, particularly in the years before and during the First World War. While regulation-issue examples existed, private-purchase instruments like this one offered both practicality and a touch of personal refinement. Surviving examples in functional condition are increasingly scarce, particularly with their original cases intact.

Collector Value:
Pocket compasses of Imperial German origin hold cross-collecting appeal—sought after by militaria enthusiasts, scientific instrument collectors, and antique horology/watch collectors due to their pocket watch styling.
