Imperial German Commemorative Brooch – Kaiser Wilhelm II & Emperor Franz Josef, 1914
This fine patriotic brooch was produced in the opening months of the First World War (1914) to commemorate the alliance of Imperial Germany and Austria-Hungary. Measuring approximately 1.25 inches (3.2 cm) in length, it was intended as a wearable token of loyalty, often purchased by civilians to show support for the war effort.
The brooch features a central oval medallion framed by a laurel wreath and topped with the Imperial German crown. At its center are finely detailed portrait profiles of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany and Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria-Hungary facing one another. Below their busts is a crisp 1914 Iron Cross, signifying the unity of the Central Powers at the outbreak of war. The portraits and motifs are rendered in relief, giving the piece striking depth despite its small size.
The reverse shows a simple horizontal pin-back construction, typical of period brooches, with no visible maker’s mark but careful hand-finishing. The pin remains intact and functional.
Condition is very good for its age, with warm gilt tones preserved across the surface. Minor wear and soft patina are present, consistent with its 110+ years of age, adding to its authenticity and charm.
These small commemorative brooches were widely worn on lapels, scarves, and civilian clothing, serving as symbols of patriotism and solidarity during the first year of the Great War. Today, they are highly collectible as period artifacts that embody the mood of 1914 and the alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary.
