An original Leutnant’s silver-cord shoulder board (Schulterstück) of Jäger-Regiment zu Pferde Nr. 2 (Mounted Rifle Regiment No. 2), identified by the gilt “2” numeral and the green-and-red underlay of that branch. The reverse carries a collection label reading “Fig. 5 – Jäg. zu Pf. R. 2.” The absence of rank stars denotes Leutnant.
The board is built of flat braided silver cord worked in the herringbone pattern and turned at the rounded head, carrying a gilt “2” numeral on the lower field. It is mounted on a green wool underlay edged in red piping — the red-and-green distinction of the mounted rifles. A vertical button slit is worked at the head, and the squared base terminates in lightly frayed cord ends.
The Jäger zu Pferde, or mounted rifles, were a light reconnaissance cavalry arm raised in the final pre-war years and expanded during the war, taking the green branch tradition of the foot Jäger onto horseback. The red-and-green underlay was their distinction, and the numeral “2” identifies the regiment.
The numeral “2” identifies the regiment, and the absence of a rank star denotes the grade of Leutnant.
Condition is good. The silver cord retains good braid definition with the expected tarnish, and the gilt numeral is secure. The green underlay and red piping are sound, and the collection label is intact on the reverse. The base shows lightly frayed cord ends in the manner normal to the unfinished tuck end. No restoration is evident in the provided images.
The mounted rifles were a short-lived and distinctive branch of the Imperial cavalry, and a numbered officer’s board in their green-and-red colours holds particular appeal for collectors of the cavalry arms, making this a sound representative piece.
