This is an authentic Gold Wound Badge (Verwundetenabzeichen in Gold) awarded during World War I to German soldiers who sustained five or more wounds in combat. This version, distinguished by its golden finish, was the highest grade of the award, following the black (for one to two wounds) and silver (for three to four wounds) variations.

The badge features a raised Stahlhelm (steel helmet) with two crossed swords, surrounded by a finely detailed laurel wreath, symbolizing honor and sacrifice. The reverse retains its original pin and clasp, with a faintly visible maker's mark. The badge exhibits period wear, patina, and signs of age, indicative of its genuine history.

Historical Context:

Introduced on March 3, 1918, by Kaiser Wilhelm II, the Wound Badge recognized frontline soldiers who endured the hardships of war. It was later continued in various forms throughout the interwar period and into World War II. The gold class was rare, as it required multiple wounds, making it a highly respected honor among the ranks.

Condition:

  • Front: Clear detailing with an aged patina; wear consistent with handling and time.
  • Back: Fully intact original pin and hinge, showing some oxidation.
  • Overall: Well-preserved for its age with an authentic combat-used appearance.

Provenance & Authenticity:

This piece is 100% original and sourced from a private collection. The details, construction, and patina align with known period examples. The badge is a prime addition for collectors of Imperial German awards or WWI militaria.

Display Suggestions:

  • Ideal for a shadow box or historical display of WWI German militaria.
  • Can be paired with Iron Crosses, service medals, or a tunic display to highlight its significance.
  • A great acquisition for collectors focusing on wounded veteran awards.

This is an exceptional opportunity to acquire a rare and historically significant piece from Imperial Germany. Serious collectors and historians take note—authentic Gold Wound Badges are increasingly difficult to find!
