An original Leutnant’s silver-cord shoulder board (Schulterstück) of the Garde-Pionier-Bataillon (Guard Pioneer Battalion). The reverse carries a collection label reading “Guard Pionier – Fig. 7.0 – Lt.” The flat braided silver cord on a black underlay with red piping, without rank stars, denotes a Leutnant of the pioneer arm.

The board is built of flat braided silver cord worked in the herringbone pattern, mounted on a black wool underlay edged in red piping — the branch distinction of the pioneers. It carries no numeral or rank star. A vertical button slit is worked at the head, the reverse is faced in black with a securing tongue retained, and the squared base terminates in cut cord ends.

The Garde-Pionier were the engineer troops of the Prussian Guard, charged with field fortification, bridging, demolition, and siege work, and they carried the elite standing of the Guard within the technical arm. Black faced with red was the branch distinction of the pioneers, carried here in the underlay and piping.

The black underlay with red piping marks the pioneer arm, and the absence of a rank star denotes the grade of Leutnant.

Condition is good. The silver cord is intact with the expected tarnish, and the black underlay and red piping are sound. The securing tongue is retained on the reverse and the collection label is intact. The base shows cut cord ends in the manner normal to the unfinished tuck end. No restoration is evident in the provided images.

A Guard pioneer officer’s board is less commonly encountered than those of the infantry, and the combination of the elite Guard standing with the distinct pioneer branch colours gives it clear appeal for collectors of Guard, engineer, or branch-specific insignia.
