Original Imperial German hand-tinted cabinet card photograph depicting a full-length studio portrait of a German cavalry non-commissioned officer in dress uniform, produced by the studio of Chr. Mönsted of Verden v.d. Neuen Thor 43. The image is presented on the photographer's heavyweight albumen-printed mount with elaborately embossed and silver-gilt foil studio imprint along the lower margin, and measures approximately 2.5 by 4 inches in the standard Visitformat (carte-de-visite) configuration.

 

The subject stands at full length in the standard studio composition of the period, his left arm resting on a sculpted plaster balustrade pedestal incorporating an armorial cartouche, his right hand grasping the hilt of a Kavalleriedegen (cavalry sword) with the blade resting point-down at his right side. He wears the standard pre-1910 Prussian-pattern dark service tunic with red plastron piping running the full length of the front closure, red cuff facings, and red shoulder straps, fastened across the chest with seven gilt buttons in the single-row infantry-cavalry configuration. The waist is closed with a white leather belt bearing the standard rectangular two-piece buckle. His head is covered with the Krätzchen (small visorless field cap) in the dark-blue body with red band and piping characteristic of cavalry units, bearing the Reich and state cockades at front. He wears dark trousers tucked into low service boots, and holds a pair of folded white parade gloves in his left hand. The mustache is trimmed in the typical late-Wilhelmine style. The expression is composed and direct, the bearing upright and characteristic of regular service.

 

The hand-tinting on the photograph has been applied in period and is largely confined to the heraldic elements of the uniform — the red plastron piping, cuff facings, shoulder straps, and cap band have been picked out in red watercolor or aniline pigment, and the gilt buttons and belt buckle have been highlighted in yellow gold tones. This is the standard kolorierte (colored) treatment offered as a premium service by German garrison-town photographers throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, intended primarily as keepsakes for family members and sweethearts and produced in modest numbers relative to the plain monochrome cabinet portrait. The application here is competently done and remains stable and bright after more than a century.

 

The studio attribution is significant for dating and unit identification. Chr. Mönsted, Verden vor dem Neuen Thor 43 identifies the photographer's premises in the Hanoverian garrison town of Verden an der Aller, located in the Province of Hanover within the Kingdom of Prussia. Verden served as the permanent peacetime garrison of Königlich Preußisches Husaren-Regiment "König Wilhelm I." (1. Rheinisches) Nr. 7 and other Prussian cavalry and infantry units during the late Kaiserreich, and any Imperial German military portrait carrying the Mönsted Verden imprint can with high probability be associated with one of the regular regiments stationed in the town. The red-trimmed dark tunic, white belt, and cavalry sword visible on the subject are consistent with the dress configuration of these regiments, although a definitive regimental attribution cannot be made from the image alone without visible collar Litzen, shoulder strap cyphers, or a regimental device. The photographer's address format and the studio's foil-stamped imprint style are consistent with production dates between approximately 1895 and 1910.

 

The cabinet card format itself was introduced into German photographic practice in the 1860s and reached its peak of popularity between 1880 and 1910, after which it was progressively displaced by the postcard format. Surviving German military cabinet cards from the late Wilhelmine period document the appearance, equipment, and bearing of regular soldiers and NCOs across the Imperial German order of battle, and serve as primary visual references for uniform researchers, regimental historians, and film and reenactment communities working at high standards of period accuracy.

 

Condition is consistent with the age of the piece. The albumen photograph remains crisp with strong tonal range and clear detail throughout the figure, the uniform, and the studio set. Hand-tinting is stable and largely intact with minor fading at the cuff facings. The mount shows period toning across the white margins with scattered foxing and minor edge wear, particularly at the corners. A small loss to the upper right corner of the mount is noted. The studio imprint along the lower margin remains crisp and the silver-gilt foil retains substantial original brightness. The reverse of the mount is plain and lightly toned with no studio backstamp, period inscription, or notation present.

 

For the collector, hand-tinted Imperial German cavalry NCO cabinet cards with identifiable garrison-town studio attributions serve multiple collecting interests. They function as documentary references for uniform and equipment researchers, as identified material for collectors building Verden- or Hanover-area regimental displays, and as standalone period decorative items appropriate for framed display.
