This is an original Imperial German Iron Cross 1914 Spange (bar), executed in solid silver and produced by the Berlin court jeweler Godet. This piece is a period patriotic or service-associated accessory and should not be confused with an Iron Cross award or clasp device; rather, it is a formal Spange-style bar intended for wear on civilian attire or non-field dress during the First World War era.
The obverse is centered by a sharply detailed Iron Cross dated 1914, displaying the crowned Prussian crown at the upper arm, the “W” cypher at center, and the 1914 date at the lower arm. The cross retains a darkened core field, likely chemically blackened rather than enamel, framed by a clean, raised silver border with fine beading that remains crisp and well defined. The cross is mounted to a horizontally oriented rectangular silver bar with a stippled or pebbled texture to both flanking panels—an unmistakably higher-grade finish associated with jeweler-produced Spangen rather than mass-market stickpins or souvenir pieces.
The reverse is clearly stamped “GODET BERLIN” above “800”, confirming both maker and silver fineness. Godet’s mark is significant: as one of the premier Imperial-era court jewelers and official suppliers of orders and decorations, Godet-produced patriotic and uniform accessories are consistently more desirable and less commonly encountered than unmarked examples. The pin and catch assembly are intact and original, with appropriate age wear and no evidence of later alteration.
Very good overall condition. Honest age toning to the silver, light surface wear consistent with period use, and minor handling marks to the reverse. The Iron Cross details remain sharp, and the piece presents strongly with excellent visual balance.
A correct, period Godet-marked Iron Cross 1914 Spange in solid silver—distinctly superior to common unmarked examples and an excellent companion piece for Iron Cross or Godet-focused collections.
