This is an original Imperial German Iron Cross Spange (Clasp), awarded as an attachment bar to the 1914 Iron Cross recipients who had previously earned the 1870 version. The central feature is the Iron Cross 2nd Class (EKII) design, adorned with the imperial crown, “W” for Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the date “1914” at the base. The cross is mounted on a rectangular textured backing, adding a distinguished appearance.

The reverse side features the maker’s mark, "Joh. Wagner & Sohn, 800, Berlin W", indicating the prestigious Berlin-based jeweler known for crafting high-quality military decorations. The "800" silver content marking confirms that this clasp was produced in fine silver. The fastening system consists of two period-correct prongs, designed for mounting on a uniform ribbon bar.

Historical Significance:

The Iron Cross (Eisernes Kreuz) was one of Imperial Germany’s most recognized military decorations. The Spange was introduced during World War I to recognize those who had already been decorated in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71, showing their continued service and bravery. This type of clasp was worn above the original Iron Cross on the uniform.

Condition:

  • Front: Excellent patina with intact details, clear markings, and strong enamel work.
  • Reverse: Fully legible maker’s mark and silver content. Some expected wear on prongs, but they remain sturdy.

Provenance & Collectability:

This Joh. Wagner & Sohn-marked example is highly sought after, as the firm was one of the most reputable manufacturers of military awards. The silver hallmark (800) further adds to its desirability.
