A visually commanding and rare Imperial German military drum hook, featuring an ornate eagle motif cast in bronze or brass, mounted on its original black leather belt tab. This stunning example of military regalia was used by a trommler (drummer), most likely for parade or ceremonial use, within an infantry or guards regiment of the Imperial German Army.
The central design features a powerful spread-winged eagle rendered in fine detail, grasping a pair of fasces-like bundles in its talons—a departure from the more commonly encountered Prussian motifs of swords or arrows, and a strong nod to Roman-inspired symbolism of authority and unity. This motif aligns with the stylized iconography popular across military bands and guard formations during the Kaiserreich period.
The eagle itself is suspended from a swiveling iron loop, securely riveted to a well-preserved black leather strap that would have been affixed to a waist or crossbelt. The leather shows appropriate age with minor edge wear and signs of field or parade use. The double hook at the bottom would have supported the suspension cord of a marching snare drum, resting it at the drummer’s side during ceremonies or parade formation.

Historical Context & Collector Notes:
This piece would have adorned the uniform of a drummer—often considered a figure of honor within the regiment—whose responsibilities were both practical (signaling movements in battle) and ceremonial (leading parades and formal appearances). The use of a fasces motif rather than overt military weapons suggests this may have been used by a Regimental Musikcorps, a Garde unit, or Kaiserliche court ceremonial ensemble.
Comparable examples can be found in European collections of military musical accoutrements, especially within Austrian and German Imperial regalia, but examples with this level of detail and preserved leatherwork are uncommon.
Display
Ideal for display as part of a full Imperial military musician’s uniform ensemble, or alongside other Kaiserreich field gear. It also makes a compelling standalone wall-mounted item due to its iconic eagle form. An exceptional acquisition for collectors of Imperial German military music, ceremonial dress, and 19th-century European martial art.
