This small but evocative enamel pin depicts the Reichskriegsflagge (Imperial War Flag) of the German Empire, flown proudly by the Kaiserliche Marine from 1903 until the end of World War I. The silver-based pin shows the black-and-white cross with the Prussian eagle at center and the Iron Cross in the canton, set against the red field of the upper stripe—expertly rendered in fired enamel. The flagpole is molded in relief with a laurel finial, capturing the sense of movement as though waving in the sea wind.

The Reichskriegsflagge was the ultimate symbol of Imperial power at sea, representing both the Kaiser and the unified might of the German fleet. Its design echoed Prussian military tradition—the black cross of the Teutonic Order and Iron Cross recalling Frederick the Great’s army—while the Imperial eagle and crown proclaimed the authority of the Hohenzollern monarchy. Officers, sailors, and civilians alike wore small enameled pins such as this to express patriotic pride, especially during the years of rapid naval expansion under Admiral von Tirpitz and Kaiser Wilhelm II’s ambitious Weltpolitik.

This example measures approximately 0.75 x 0.5 inches, with a simple early safety clasp on the reverse and no maker mark visible. The enamel retains strong color with light wear and one small chip near the flagstaff, adding to its authenticity and age character. The silver mount shows gentle tarnish consistent with period storage.

These patriotic pieces were often sold through naval gift shops in ports such as Kiel, Wilhelmshaven, and Hamburg, cherished by sailors and families connected to Germany’s High Seas Fleet. Surviving examples in enamel remain highly sought among Imperial naval collectors.

Condition very good overall with minor enamel loss.
