This Imperial German Navy officer’s personal silver storage box is a fine artifact from the Kaiserliche Marine era. The exterior of the octagonal silver-plated box features finely engraved horizontal lines and a centrally placed Imperial German Navy emblem, depicting a crowned fouled anchor, symbolizing the officer class within the navy. This was likely used for storing small personal items, such as cufflinks, buttons, or other valuables.
The hinged lid is well-crafted, with signs of aging that add to its authenticity. The interior is gilded, though it has developed a patina over time, a testament to its age and use. The base is also silver-plated and shows natural wear.
Historical Context
During the Imperial German period (1871-1918), naval officers often carried personal storage boxes to keep their small personal effects safe while aboard ships or during official functions. This specific example, with its imperial crown emblem, suggests that it belonged to a commissioned officer or someone of significant rank within the Kaiserliche Marine. The craftsmanship and design align with luxury items used by high-ranking naval personnel.
Condition
- Exterior: Shows some surface wear, oxidation, and minor tarnishing, consistent with age. The silver plating is intact, with some patina adding to its historical authenticity.
- Interior: Gilding inside remains, though there is some discoloration and residue from storage.
- Hinge: Functional and secure, though shows signs of age.
Provenance and Rarity
These personalized officer storage boxes are highly collectible due to their naval affiliation and imperial provenance. The presence of the crowned naval emblem makes it an even rarer find.
This piece is ideal for collectors of Imperial German naval artifacts, particularly those who specialize in personal officer items, silverware, or military accessories. It would also make an excellent display piece alongside naval daggers, officer uniforms, or other period accessories.
Display & Preservation
- Best displayed in a glass case or alongside other Kaiserliche Marine artifacts.
- Regular silver polishing is recommended to maintain its shine, but some collectors prefer leaving the patina intact for authenticity.
This is an exceptional piece of Imperial German naval history, connecting directly to the life of an officer aboard one of Kaiser Wilhelm II’s prestigious fleets.
