This original Imperial German Navy (Kaiserliche Marine) dress tunic is a superb example of naval uniform craftsmanship from the late Imperial period, tailored for a Petty Officer or Senior Petty Officer. Such tunics were worn for formal occasions and parades, reflecting the prestige and tradition of the Kaiser’s fleet.

Physical Attributes:
The tunic is constructed from high-quality, deep navy blue wool, fully lined in black, and features a double row of ten gilt anchor buttons, each bearing the Imperial crown and fouled anchor. The cuffs are adorned with gold tresse, denoting NCO or senior enlisted status, and each sleeve is finished with a set of five matching gilt buttons. The left sleeve displays a full set of original insignia: a large gold-embroidered anchor, a flaming grenade, and a torpedo device, all above red chevrons, indicating technical specialty and rank within the torpedo or artillery branch. The upper sleeve patch with crown and crossed batons further suggests a senior technical or warrant officer role. All insignia are period-applied and correct for the era.

Historical Context:
The Kaiserliche Marine was a symbol of Imperial Germany’s global ambitions and technological prowess. Petty Officers and technical specialists played a vital role in the operation of the High Seas Fleet, and their dress uniforms reflected both their authority and their technical expertise. This tunic, with its complete and original insignia, is a rare survivor from a period when the German Navy was at its zenith, just prior to and during the First World War.

Condition:
The tunic remains in very good condition, with strong color retention and only minor signs of age. The wool is free from major mothing or damage, and the lining is intact with only light wear. All buttons and insignia are original and securely attached. There are no significant repairs or alterations, and the gold tresse retains its luster. Please review the detailed photographs for a comprehensive view of the tunic’s condition.

Provenance:
This tunic comes from a private collection and has not been restored or modified. All insignia and components are original to the piece, ensuring authenticity for the discerning collector.

Pricing Justification:
Imperial German Navy uniforms with complete, original insignia and in this condition are increasingly scarce. The presence of technical specialty patches and senior rank insignia further enhances its desirability. Comparable tunics, especially with all original insignia, command a premium in today’s market.
