This striking vintage postcard features the SMS Bremen, a third-class cruiser of the Imperial German Navy, sailing under full steam with the national war ensign prominently displayed. The vessel, part of the Bremen-class light cruisers, was launched in 1903-1904 and served as a vital component of the Kaiserliche Marine before and during World War I.

The reverse side of the postcard provides technical specifications, including a displacement of 3,200 tons, a length of 341 feet, a beam of 43¼ feet, and a draft of 16½ feet. Notably, it had an armament of ten 4.1-inch guns, ten 1.4-inch guns, four machine guns, and two light guns, boasting a top speed of 23 knots with a complement of 268 officers and men.

This postcard was issued as a promotional item by the Prudential Insurance Company of America, which adds to its uniqueness, as companies frequently used naval imagery to evoke themes of strength and security during the early 20th century.

Condition:

  • Front: Vibrant and well-preserved imagery of the Bremen. Minor signs of handling.
  • Reverse: Clear, legible text with only minor wear. Lightly marked with an old price notation.

Historical Significance:

The SMS Bremen was an active participant in Germany’s naval operations and reflects the rapid advancements in naval warfare leading up to World War I. Collectors of Imperial German naval memorabilia, as well as those with an interest in pre-dreadnought-era warships, will appreciate the historical value of this piece.

Display & Collection Appeal:

This postcard would be an excellent addition to any Imperial German Navy collection. It can be framed alongside other naval ephemera or displayed in an album dedicated to pre-WWI German maritime history.
