Imperial German Officer’s Gold-Toned Double Pips Rank Bar (c. Pre–World War I)

This is an elegant and finely crafted Imperial German officer’s uniform accessory, a gold-toned bar with two affixed officer rank pips. Measuring approximately 3 inches in length, the bar features a slender horizontal rod with two applied gilt pips, each executed in a radiating sunburst pattern with a raised central rosette. These pips are identical in form to those found on officer shoulder boards and collar tabs, representing higher field or staff officer grades within the Imperial German Army.

The reverse shows a functional long pin assembly typical of privately purchased officer accoutrements. The pin is affixed by hand-soldered mounts, indicating pre-war or early wartime private tailor manufacture rather than mass production. The length of this bar suggests it may have been worn horizontally on a uniform or greatcoat as a removable insignia device, potentially denoting rank or association in formal/off-duty dress.

Historical Context:
Officer pips were a defining feature of Imperial German insignia, with the number and arrangement identifying specific grades of rank. While most examples were directly attached to shoulder straps or boards, specialized bars such as this were sometimes produced for gala, walking-out, or veterans’ attire. The use of two pips would typically correspond to a major (two pips, no crown) in many line regiments, though variations existed across branches. The gold finish indicates association with senior officer status and higher prestige.

Condition:
The bar retains its original gilt finish, though with visible toning, wear, and surface oxidation consistent with age. The two officer pips remain sharply defined with crisp radial detail. The reverse shows expected patina, with the pin intact and functional, though showing age darkening. Overall, the piece is structurally sound and well-preserved for display.

Dimensions:

  • Length: approx. 3 inches (7.5 cm)

  • Height (including pips): approx. 0.5 inch (1.2 cm)

Collector’s Notes:
Imperial German officer insignia of this type is seldom encountered in freestanding bar form, making this an unusual and desirable variation. Collectors of Imperial rank insignia, officer regalia, or rare tailor-made uniform fittings will appreciate this example for its originality and intact presentation.
