This is a finely woven Imperial German officer’s parade sash featuring alternating silver and muted gray stripes with heavy silver bullion tassels. The sash retains its original hardware fittings, including the two-piece hook-and-catch clasp, and both bullion drops are intact with their braided knot work and fringe showing only mild wear consistent with age.
Parade sashes of this type were worn by officers across the German states, suspended from the waist beneath the tunic during formal occasions, parades, and reviews. The example here is most consistent with Prussian officer issue, given its silver-and-gray coloration and clasp form. By contrast, Bavarian officer sashes often incorporated light blue, Saxon examples a subtle green, and Württemberg examples crimson accents. The absence of state-specific colors here suggests a Prussian origin, though other states employed very similar silver sashes for line officers.
The condition is very good for its age, with minor fraying and slight toning but no significant loss. Both tassels retain their full bullion fringe, which remains bright and well-twisted. The clasp operates correctly, and the fabric retains excellent structural integrity.
Because subtle weave and color differences can help confirm precise attribution, we welcome input from advanced collectors. While most likely Prussian, this sash may also represent another German state’s officer pattern.
A handsome and original officer’s parade sash – a centerpiece of formal uniform attire.
