This is a superb example of an Imperial German officer’s silver bullion dress sword knot, or portepee, from the late 19th to early 20th century. These ornamental knots were worn by officers of the Imperial German Army on their swords and sabers as both a functional and decorative accessory. This piece is woven from fine silver wire thread in a chevron braid, terminating in a thick, ribbed bullion acorn (knauf), indicative of officer rank and quality.

The sword knot displays the classic looped strap, reinforced and sewn at the neck for attaching to the hilt. It remains structurally sound with a tightly braided stem and beautifully dense silver bullion wrap, showcasing exceptional craftsmanship. These knots were more than decoration; they served as regimental distinctions, and in some cases, carried encoded rank or unit information depending on the color and weave.

This example likely dates to pre-WWI, with construction techniques and materials consistent with use in the Prussian or broader German officer corps. It would have adorned the sword of an officer on formal parade or walking-out dress, rather than in field conditions. The metallic thread retains strong luster, and the knot’s body shows no unraveling or major distortion—rare for a piece of this age and use.

Collectors will appreciate the detail in the bullion weave and the fine silver wrap that retains strong visual presence. A notable artifact from Germany’s Imperial military tradition, this sword knot would make a significant addition to any edged weapon or uniform accessory display.

Condition:

  • Very good overall condition with minimal tarnish

  • No fraying or unraveling

  • Strap is supple and intact

  • Dense, even wrapping at the acorn

  • Slight age-related patina appropriate for its era

Display Suggestions:
Ideal for pairing with a Prussian or Saxon officer’s sword or for use in a shadowbox alongside Imperial medals and insignia. It also complements period dress sabers or parade belts in advanced collections.
