Imperial German Jager zu Pferde 10 Oberleutnant Numeral Shoulder Board

An original Oberleutnant’s silver-cord shoulder board (Schulterstück) of Jäger-Regiment zu Pferde Nr. 10 (Mounted Rifle Regiment No. 10), with gilt fittings. The reverse carries a collection label reading “Fig. 5.0 – Jäg. zu Pf. 10 – Brass.” A gilt “10” numeral with a single rank star denotes Oberleutnant (first lieutenant).

The board is built of flat braided silver cord worked in the herringbone pattern and turned at the rounded head, carrying a gilt “10” numeral with a single gilt six-pointed rank star (Stern) on the lower field. It is mounted on a green underlay carrying a yellow border — the two-colour, or dual, underlay introduced in 1915. A vertical button slit is worked at the head, and the squared base terminates in cut cord ends.

The Jäger zu Pferde, or mounted rifles, were a light reconnaissance cavalry arm carrying the green Jäger tradition onto horseback. The numeral “10” identifies the regiment, and the dual underlay reflects the 1915 reform under which a second underlay colour was added to sharpen regimental identification in the field.

The numeral “10” identifies the regiment and the single gilt star marks the Oberleutnant’s grade; the two-colour underlay places the board in the later war period.

Condition is good. The silver cord retains good braid definition with the expected tarnish, and the gilt numeral and rank star are present and secure. The dual underlay is sound, the green field and yellow border both clear, and the collection label is intact on the reverse. The base shows cut cord ends in the manner normal to the unfinished tuck end. No restoration is evident in the provided images.
