Imperial German Patriotic Pendant – 1914 Enamel & Stone-Set Miniature
This is a fine and very small (.75 inch) Imperial German patriotic pendant dating from the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.
The obverse features two enamel flags, one in black-gold and the other in black-white-red, symbolizing Imperial loyalty and unity. Between the flags is the date 1914, marking the commencement of the war. Beneath, a finely enameled green laurel wreath encircles a set green stone, possibly intended as a glass “gem” to add ornamentation and patriotic flair. The piece is gilt-finished, giving it a rich appearance despite its diminutive size.
The reverse is plain gilt with the stone setting clearly visible. A small safety pin is affixed for suspension, suggesting it was intended to be worn discreetly on civilian clothing, likely by women or family members as a token of patriotic support.
Measurements: 0.75 in. tall.
Condition: Very good overall. Enamel remains vibrant with only light surface wear. Gilt finish shows mild age toning. Suspension loop and pin remain intact and functional. Stone inset secure and retains its color.
These miniature enameled pendants were widely produced at the beginning of WWI as patriotic jewelry, allowing the wearer to display loyalty to Kaiser and Fatherland. They were often given as gifts to wives, sisters, or mothers of serving soldiers. Surviving examples with intact enamel and original fittings are sought by collectors of Imperial German jewelry and home-front memorabilia.
