This rare and evocative Imperial German portrait brooch features the photographic likeness of a young officer, preserved beneath a domed glass cover. The officer is depicted in full uniform, wearing a high-collared tunic with decorative buttons and insignia, along with a spiked helmet (Pickelhaube), indicating his service in one of the line or guard regiments of the Kaiser’s army. His youthful appearance suggests this piece may have been produced as a personal or family keepsake, likely during the pre-war or early First World War period.

The portrait is mounted in a circular gilt frame, ornamented with evenly spaced bead-like studs around the outer edge, giving the brooch a distinctly turn-of-the-century decorative appeal. The reverse retains its original pin-back fitting, showing patina and light oxidation consistent with age. The glass covering the photograph displays several cracks, yet the image of the officer remains highly visible and striking, with a sense of immediacy that connects the viewer to the young soldier.

Portrait jewelry of this type was popular in Germany around 1890–1915, often commissioned by families to honor sons or husbands in service. Such brooches were worn by wives, mothers, or sisters, serving both as adornment and a deeply personal reminder of loved ones at the front.

Measurements:

  • Diameter: 1.25 in (3.2 cm)

  • Weight: Light, suited for wear as a lapel or dress pin

Condition:

  • Photograph retains good clarity though glass has several visible cracks.

  • Gilt frame with even patina and minor wear.

  • Reverse pin-back functional, though shows age-related oxidation.

Historical Note:
Keepsake portrait pins such as this one are rare survivals, as many were worn daily and did not endure. The presence of the officer’s Pickelhaube suggests a production date prior to or in the early stages of the First World War, before Germany transitioned toward simplified wartime portraits.
