Original Imperial German Prussian Army enlisted Mannschaften (enlisted ranks) leather waist belt complete with its two-piece brass and silver-colored metal belt buckle. This is the classic Prussian configuration used during the late Kaiserreich and into the opening period of the First World War, combining a rectangular brass buckle body with an applied circular Prussian crown and motto device.

The buckle is constructed from a rectangular yellow brass plate fitted at the center with a separately applied silver-colored roundel. The roundel displays the Prussian royal crown in high relief, surrounded by a wreath and the inscription “GOTT MIT UNS,” translating as “God With Us.” This long-established Prussian military motto was prominently incorporated into enlisted belt buckles and became one of the most recognizable insignia elements of the Prussian Army during the Imperial German period.

The central crown is the royal crown associated with the Hohenzollern monarchy of the Kingdom of Prussia, distinguishing the buckle from those worn by troops of the other constituent German states, whose belt plates carried their own state-specific emblems and mottos. The contrasting brass plate and silver-colored applied device are characteristic of the earlier, more decorative enlisted buckle construction used before wartime material economies brought increasingly simplified metal fittings.

The buckle remains attached to its original brown leather military waist belt. The leather is substantial and retains a deep reddish-brown surface finish, with the natural flesh side visible on the interior. The adjustment end retains multiple period-punched sizing holes, while stitched leather reinforcement sections remain at the attachment points. Brass fastening and adjustment hardware is present, including the buckle fittings and rear attachment arrangement.

The complete belt is particularly useful from a collecting standpoint because it preserves the relationship between the Prussian enlisted buckle and the leather equipment on which it was actually worn. Detached Imperial German buckles survive with some frequency, while complete belt-and-buckle combinations provide a much better representation of the soldier’s original field and garrison equipment.

During the Kaiserreich, the German Army remained a federal institution whose contingents retained strong state identities. Prussian troops formed by far the largest component, and the Hohenzollern crown together with “GOTT MIT UNS” immediately identified the wearer with the Prussian military establishment. Equipment of this type would have been familiar throughout the prewar army and remained in service during the early campaigns of 1914 before wartime production increasingly favored simplified and less costly materials.

Condition is good and honest for an original service-used leather accoutrement more than a century old. The brass buckle body has developed an even aged patina with scattered surface spotting and handling marks. The silver-colored central roundel retains strong definition to the crown, lettering, wreath and surrounding detail, with darker toning in the recessed areas emphasizing the relief.

The leather remains complete but shows considerably more evidence of wear. There are surface scuffs, creasing, edge wear and localized abrasions throughout, together with wear around the adjustment holes and fastening areas. The stitched reinforcement patches remain present, although some stitching shows age and use. The leather edges display expected dryness and minor loss in isolated areas, particularly near the adjustment end. These signs of use are consistent with an enlisted belt that saw actual service rather than remaining unused in stores.

As a complete Prussian enlisted belt and buckle, this is a strong representative example of one of the most recognizable pieces of Imperial German field equipment. The combination of the Hohenzollern crown, traditional “GOTT MIT UNS” motto, two-piece buckle construction and original brown leather belt gives the set considerable appeal for collectors of Prussian uniforms, Imperial German accoutrements and First World War equipment.
