A fine example of an Imperial German soldier’s portrait pin, featuring a clear studio photograph under domed glass. Worn by sweethearts, mothers, or family members, these intimate keepsakes were cherished mementos during the Kaiserreich and WWI era—a personal connection to a soldier on campaign.
Historical context
Small-scale portrait jewelry became extremely popular in Germany around 1900–1918, as the country maintained one of Europe’s largest standing armies. These pins and brooches were often given before deployment as tokens of affection and remembrance.
This example depicts a young enlisted soldier in standard field-gray (Feldgrau) uniform tunic with stand collar and distinct prewar-style peaked cap (with visible cockade at center). Such portrait pins were worn daily by family members or tucked into lockets or prayer books, underscoring the emotional reality of conscription and wartime separation.
