This is an original Imperial German period portrait pin, housing a photographic image of a uniformed German soldier, likely dating to the late Wilhelmine era, circa 1900–1914. The piece consists of a circular photograph set beneath a convex protective glass, mounted within an ornate gilt metal frame formed of delicate wire-scroll filigree. The frame is finely constructed, with symmetrical looping motifs and small applied nodes, giving the pendant a refined yet personal character typical of prewar sweetheart or remembrance jewelry.

The photograph depicts a young enlisted man or junior NCO wearing a dark Imperial German tunic with standing collar and visible buttons, consistent with pre–First World War service. His hairstyle, facial hair, and uniform styling place the image firmly in the Kaiserreich period. The portrait is professionally taken, likely in a civilian studio, and intended for private keeping rather than official documentation. Such pieces were commonly worn by wives, fiancées, or mothers, or carried as keepsakes by soldiers themselves.

The image shows age-appropriate fading and tonal softening, with light surface marks beneath the glass consistent with early photographic processes. These characteristics are expected and desirable, confirming originality rather than later reproduction. The gilt frame retains a warm, aged patina with no evidence of modern polishing. The filigree remains intact, with no visible breaks or repairs.

Historically, personal portrait lockets such as this offer a deeply human connection to Imperial Germany’s military culture. Unlike medals or issued insignia, these objects were privately commissioned and worn close to the body, making each example unique. They are increasingly sought after by advanced collectors for their direct association with individual soldiers whose identities were rarely recorded elsewhere.

Condition is very good overall, with intact glass, strong image presence, and a complete decorative frame showing only light wear consistent with age.
