Offered here is a poignant Imperial German photo brooch, featuring the portrait of a soldier in uniform, preserved under convex glass and set in a circular metal frame. These brooches were often worn by family members as keepsakes during the First World War, serving as a personal connection to loved ones at the front.

The photograph depicts a soldier wearing the standard issue Feldmütze (field cap) with cockades visible at the band, as well as his tunic with stand-up collar and button closures. His stern expression and neatly groomed mustache reflect the era’s martial pride. The sepia-toned image remains well-preserved with only minor age toning.

The brooch measures approximately 30 mm in diameter and retains its original pin-back fastener, still functional despite its age. The reverse shows the original construction, with no modern repairs. The metal frame is decorated with concentric circular ridges and retains an attractive patina from age.

Condition:

  • Photograph remains clear with good contrast.

  • Glass covering intact, no cracks.

  • Frame shows expected wear, light tarnishing, and patina.

  • Original pin present and functional.

Historical Context:

Photo jewelry became widely popular in Imperial Germany during the war years (1914–1918). Families and sweethearts often commissioned such brooches to wear close to the heart, making them deeply personal artifacts of the home front. Unlike mass-issued medals or badges, these pieces were privately purchased and therefore unique in each example.
