This is a fine example of an Imperial German two-medal ribbon bar, featuring an appealing combination of medals and campaign bars, which provide historical insight into the service record of the original recipient. The bar is constructed in a classic court-mounting style, with finely sewn ribbons and an authentic pinback attachment.
The leftmost ribbon is black and white, the classic Prussian color scheme, denoting service-related decorations, while the rightmost golden-yellow ribbon is associated with a commemorative medal.
Attached to the bar are two medals:
-
1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War Commemorative Medal:
- Features the inscription "1870-1871" along with a laurel wreath and crossed swords.
- This medal was issued to veterans of the Franco-Prussian War and played a significant role in German military history.
-
Wilhelm I Centenary Medal (1897):
- The obverse displays a detailed relief portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm I with inscriptions commemorating his 100th birthday (1797-1897).
- The reverse includes a beautifully detailed scene with the inscription “Zum Andenken an den hundertsten Geburtstag des Grossen Kaisers Wilhelm I” (In memory of the hundredth birthday of the great Kaiser Wilhelm I).
- This medal was awarded in 1897 to mark the centennial of Wilhelm I’s birth.
The bar features three battle clasps, which indicate specific battles in which the recipient participated:
- "Gravelotte-St. Privat" – Denotes participation in one of the most intense battles of the Franco-Prussian War on August 18, 1870.
- "Noisseville" – Refers to a battle fought between August 31 and September 1, 1870.
- "N.D. 1/2" – This likely references another notable battle engagement during the war.
The reverse of the ribbon bar showcases detailed stitching and a period-correct pin attachment, which indicates it was properly mounted for wear.
Condition:
- The ribbons show signs of aging but remain intact, with natural fading that attests to their authenticity.
- The clasps retain their original patina and lettering, though there is some wear, particularly on the edges.
- The medals themselves show light wear but remain in good condition with well-preserved details.
Historical Significance:
This ribbon bar tells the story of a soldier who actively participated in the Franco-Prussian War, earning distinctions for key battles. The inclusion of the Wilhelm I Centenary Medal suggests that the veteran remained in service or was recognized for his role even decades later. Such bars were proudly worn on formal occasions by veterans and serve as a testament to their military career.
