Imperial German U-Boat Badge Burl Wood Cigarette Case

This handsome Imperial German cigarette case is fashioned from richly figured burl wood and decorated with a miniature U-Boot-Kriegsabzeichen, or U-Boat War Badge, emblem. The badge’s Imperial crown, laurel wreath, and submarine identify it as the First World War pattern rather than the later Kriegsmarine design.

The rectangular case has rounded corners, raised borders, and a convenient thumb recess along the opening edge. Its highly figured wood displays warm honey-brown and darker tones throughout the exterior and interior. A small metal hinge secures the lid, while the recessed interior provides space for cigarettes or other small personal effects.

Kaiser Wilhelm II instituted the Imperial U-Boat War Badge on 1 February 1918 in recognition of submarine crewmen who had completed three war patrols. Its distinctive crowned submarine design quickly became associated with one of the Imperial German Navy’s most demanding services. Privately purchased and commemorative personal articles bearing the emblem were prized reminders of U-boat service. This case may have been made as such a private-purchase or presentation piece, although no recipient history accompanies it.

No maker’s mark, owner’s name, or inscription is evident. The miniature emblem remains an attractive focal point and displays contrasting metal tones that complement the burl wood.

The case remains in good condition for its age. The wood retains an appealing mellow patina with scattered scratches, handling marks, darkened areas, and small blemishes. A narrow age-related hairline is visible near the front edge, with additional surface wear to the reverse and interior. The hinge remains intact and the case opens properly.
