An attractive Imperial German World War I patriotic porcelain commemorative goblet produced by Heinrich & Co. of Selb, Bavaria, during the First World War. Bearing the inscription "Zum Andenken Kriegsjahr 1914/17," this decorative drinking vessel represents the widespread tradition of German wartime remembrance through specially produced porcelain, glassware, and other patriotic household objects.
The goblet is manufactured from fine white glazed porcelain and features a distinctive chalice-shaped body, gently flared upper rim, tapered bowl, narrow stem, and broad circular pedestal foot. The elegant form is enhanced by colorful floral ornamentation, metallic gold decoration, and a subtle iridescent finish visible across portions of the body and base.
The upper rim is decorated with a continuous arrangement of vivid cobalt-blue flowers with dark centers and bright green leaves. Immediately beneath this floral border are sharply defined horizontal black and reddish-brown bands, creating a striking contrast against the white porcelain.
A further decorative band of stylized oak foliage encircles the upper portion of the goblet. The foliage is rendered in muted green, brown, and gold tones, recalling the oak-leaf symbolism frequently employed in Imperial German patriotic art.
In German military and commemorative traditions, oak leaves were associated with strength, endurance, courage, and national identity. Their appearance alongside the wartime inscription reinforces the patriotic character of the piece.
The lower body remains predominantly white, allowing the colorful decoration and commemorative inscription to stand prominently. Fine gold bands accent the transition to the stem and the pedestal foot. The foot exhibits a delicate mother-of-pearl-like iridescence, particularly noticeable as the porcelain catches the light.
The goblet measures approximately 5 3/4 inches in overall height.
Historical Background
When the First World War began in August 1914, the German Empire entered a conflict that would profoundly transform European politics, society, and military history.
Under Kaiser Wilhelm II, Germany mobilized millions of men from Prussia, Bavaria, Saxony, Württemberg, and the other constituent states of the Empire. The conflict quickly developed into a prolonged war of attrition, affecting not only the soldiers at the front but also the civilian population.
Patriotic commemorative objects became an important part of German material culture during the war. Porcelain manufacturers, decorative workshops, and private retailers produced cups, goblets, plates, steins, and other household items bearing military motifs, national symbols, wartime slogans, and commemorative dates.
Such objects served several purposes. Some were purchased as personal keepsakes, while others were presented to soldiers, family members, or associates in remembrance of wartime service and shared experiences.
The inscription on this goblet specifically references the period from 1914 through 1917, placing its commemorative subject within the first four years of the conflict.
By 1917, the war had entered a particularly difficult phase for Germany. The fighting on the Western Front remained intense, food shortages and economic restrictions increasingly affected the civilian population, and unrestricted submarine warfare contributed to the United States entering the conflict in April of that year.
Despite these hardships, patriotic decorative objects continued to express remembrance, loyalty, endurance, and attachment to the German nation.
This goblet is particularly interesting because its decoration relies primarily on traditional floral ornamentation and symbolic oak foliage rather than overtly martial imagery. It illustrates the manner in which familiar domestic porcelain forms were adapted to wartime commemorative purposes.
Manufacturer and Markings
The underside bears the crowned manufacturer's mark:
"H & C"
"SELB"
"BAVARIA"
This mark identifies the Bavarian porcelain manufacturer Heinrich & Co., established by Franz Heinrich in Selb in 1896. The enterprise began as a porcelain-decorating business before developing its own porcelain manufacturing operations in the early twentieth century.
Selb was one of Germany's most important centers of porcelain manufacture, internationally recognized for the quality of its ceramic production.
The H & C Selb Bavaria mark is consistent with the period beginning in 1911 and supports the identification of the goblet as an early twentieth-century Bavarian production.
The firm's established manufacturing capabilities and decorative expertise made it well suited to producing commemorative porcelain during the Imperial German period.
Inscription and Translation
The goblet bears the following German inscription in decorative lettering:
"Zum Andenken Kriegsjahr 1914/17."
English translation:
"In Remembrance of the War Years 1914–1917."
The inscription identifies the piece as a commemorative object associated with the First World War. It does not identify a particular regiment, soldier, battle, or recipient.
Condition
The goblet remains in very good antique condition, displaying the light wear expected of a porcelain commemorative piece from the First World War period.
The white glazed body retains a pleasing luster, while the blue floral decoration, green foliage, black and reddish-brown bands, and gilded inscription remain well defined.
The metallic gold detailing shows minor age-related wear, particularly along exposed edges and the upper rim. The iridescent finish across the lower body and pedestal remains attractive.
Some light surface marks and minor evidence of handling are present. The underside displays typical age-related discoloration and contact wear around the foot.
No obvious major chips, cracks, or repairs are evident on the examined surfaces.
Collector Significance
An appealing example of Imperial German World War I patriotic porcelain, combining attractive decorative craftsmanship with a specifically dated wartime commemorative inscription.
Its Heinrich & Co. Selb Bavaria manufacturer's mark provides an identifiable origin, while the 1914–1917 inscription gives the piece a direct connection to the material culture of the First World War.
Particularly suitable for collectors of Imperial German patriotic memorabilia, Bavarian porcelain, World War I home-front artifacts, German military commemoratives, and antique European ceramics.
