This is a fine example of a German patriotic brooch from the First World War, modeled after the Iron Cross of 1914. The cross is rendered in black enamel with raised gilt borders, featuring the crowned initial "W" of Kaiser Wilhelm II at the center and the date 1914 at the base. Surrounding the cross is a decorative gilt wreath, carefully worked with knotted ribbon detail at each corner.
These types of brooches were privately purchased and worn on civilian clothing, often by family members of soldiers serving at the front. They symbolized both national pride and personal connection to the conflict, and were produced in numerous styles during the war.
Condition:
The brooch remains in very good condition, with the enamel of the Iron Cross largely intact and showing minimal wear. The gilt wreath retains much of its original finish, with light toning and surface wear consistent with age. The reverse displays a functional pin-back closure, with expected patina to the metal.
Dimensions:
Approx. 1.25 in (3.2 cm) square.
Historical Note:
Patriotic jewelry such as this became widely popular in Germany during the war years, serving as wearable symbols of loyalty to the Kaiser and the army. While not official decorations, these items are now valued as tangible reminders of the home front during the Great War.
