This striking assembled set features three iconic German military decorations mounted together on a single wartime ribbon: the 1870 Iron Cross 2nd Class, a 25-year oak leaf jubilee device, and the 1914 Spange (bar) denoting a second award of the Iron Cross in the First World War. This was a privilege reserved for veterans who had earned the Iron Cross in the Franco-Prussian War and continued to distinguish themselves in 1914–1918.
Iron Cross 2nd Class 1870
The Iron Cross itself displays the standard 1870 configuration with raised rim, crowned "W" cipher, and the year "1870" at the bottom. The reverse bears the “FW” cipher with oak leaves and the 1813 founding date. The core has a blackened finish, and the cross is magnetic, though some loss of finish is visible.
While visually consistent with period construction, the Iron Cross is not currently attributed to a known official manufacturer, and we are unable to confirm whether it is a period-made piece or a high-quality early post-war replacement. As such, the price reflects this uncertainty.
Oak Leaves – 25-Year Jubilee Device
Mounted above the Iron Cross is the 25-year oak leaf cluster, awarded to recipients of the 1870 Iron Cross who remained in good standing and lived to 1895. This piece is highly detailed, with beautiful veining and raised numerals, and is made of stamped silver, unmarked but consistent with known period examples. This oak leaf is a scarce and desirable addition in its own right.
Spange 1914 – Marked “Joh. Wagner & Sohn, Berlin W”
The Spange or clasp is clearly stamped by Joh. Wagner & Sohn, Berlin W, one of the most respected makers of Imperial and early WWI German decorations. This firm was contracted to produce the Spange for re-awardees of the Iron Cross during the Great War. It is affixed to the ribbon via the original rear clip and displays excellent detail with the crowned “W” and the 1914 date below a finely textured background. The silver bar shows honest age and patina.
Ribbon
The ribbon is in very good condition, maintaining its strong black and white colors, with some expected fraying at the top fold. The combination is both historically accurate and aesthetically impressive for display.
Condition
Overall condition is very good to excellent. All components show expected wear but no major damage. The Spange and oak leaf are unquestionably original. The Iron Cross is priced as an unverified piece pending expert authentication.
Display & Collector Appeal
This would make a powerful addition to any Iron Cross, Franco-Prussian War, or WWI veteran grouping. The combination of the 25-Year Jubilee oak leaves with the 1914 Spange tells a compelling story of long service across two major European wars. This is a complete and display-ready piece with strong historical and visual impact.
