This Imperial German commemorative table medal was issued to honor Kaiser Wilhelm II’s 50th birthday on January 27, 1909. Struck in silver or silvered bronze, the obverse features a finely detailed portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm II in full military dress, adorned with the Pour le Mérite (Blue Max) decoration, a symbol of distinguished service in the Prussian military. Above his likeness, a banner inscribed "27. JANUAR 1909" commemorates the milestone event, while his name "WILHELM II. I.R." (Imperator Rex) is engraved along the lower edge.

The reverse of the medal is a highly detailed artistic composition, featuring:

  • A Prussian heraldic coat of arms at the center, flanked by two cherubs holding a laurel wreath.
  • Architectural landmarks of the German Empire, including what appears to be the Berlin Palace (Berliner Schloss) and possibly the Neues Palais in Potsdam.
  • A detailed castle scene at the lower section, which may depict the Hohenzollern Castle, the ancestral home of the Hohenzollern dynasty.

The artistry and high relief of this medal reflect the imperial pride and grandeur associated with Kaiser Wilhelm II’s rule.

Historical Context:

Wilhelm II reigned as German Emperor and King of Prussia from 1888 to 1918, leading the German Empire through a period of military expansion, industrial growth, and diplomatic tensions that culminated in World War I. His 50th birthday was widely celebrated throughout the empire, with medals, plaques, and commemorative items being issued to mark the occasion. These medals were often presented to officials, military officers, and dignitaries as a token of imperial favor.

Condition:

  • Obverse: Crisp details, slight signs of wear, particularly around the rim.
  • Reverse: Beautiful patina, with minor surface marks that do not detract from the overall appeal.

Collectibility & Display:

This medal is a highly desirable piece for collectors of Imperial German memorabilia. Given its fine craftsmanship and connection to Wilhelm II’s reign, it holds significant historical value. It would make an excellent addition to a display of German table medals, Prussian militaria, or commemorative imperial artifacts.
