Mecklenburg-Strelitz 1914 Cross for Distinction in War, 2nd Class (Military)

While many are familiar with the common Iron Cross, the Mecklenburg-Strelitz Cross for Distinction is a far rarer beast. Representing one of the smallest Grand Duchies in the German Empire, this award was the "Iron Cross of Strelitz." With its beautiful blackened finish and the inspiring motto "Brave and Loyal," it is a high-impact piece for any collector specializing in the "small state" contingents of the Imperial Army.

  • The Institution: Originally founded in 1871, this version was re-instituted on August 11, 1914, by Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich VI.

  • Rarity: Because Mecklenburg-Strelitz was such a small state, production numbers were low. Only about 8,100 of these crosses were awarded during the entire First World War, compared to the 5 million Prussian EK2s.

  • The Motto: Unlike the Prussian "God With Us," Strelitz used "TAPFER UND TREU" (Brave and Loyal), emphasizing the personal bond between the soldier and the Grand Duke.

  • The Cross: A cross pattée struck in blackened bronze (early) or black-finished iron/zinc (late war). It features a distinct beaded/ribbed border.

  • The Obverse (Front):

    • Center Medallion: The crowned royal cypher "AD" (for Adolf Friedrich VI).

    • Upper Arm: A small Imperial Crown.

    • Lower Arm: The date "1914".

    • Side Arms: The left arm features "TAPFER" and the right arm features "UND TREU".

  • The Reverse (Back): Usually plain, showing the flat back of the strike.

  • The Ribbon: Suspended from the Combatant's Ribbon: Dark blue with yellow side-stripes (the national colors of the Grand Duchy).

The cross is in excellent condition. The blackened finish remains deep and even, which is crucial because these often suffer from "scuffing" on the raised lettering. The "AD" cypher and the motto are perfectly legible. The ribbon is a period original; the blue and yellow colors remain distinct and have not faded significantly.
