Ernst Udet (1886-1941) was Germany’s second-leading WW I ace. Recognized by Manfred von Richthofen for his exceptional flying ability, Udet was recruited to join Jasta 11. While he was a genius in the cockpit, his personal life outside of flying was often tumultuous.

Historical Background:

After WW I, during which he achieved sixty-two confirmed victories, Udet remained immersed in aviation as a stunt pilot and aircraft manufacturer. Despite numerous personal challenges and failed relationships, he joined the Nazi Party in 1933 and played a crucial role in the Luftwaffe's creation under Hermann Göring. Udet significantly contributed to aircraft development, most notably the JU-87 Stuka. Under political pressure, Udet took his own life in November 1941, and was buried with honors, revered by the German public.

About the Postcard:

This oversized postcard measures 4 1/4″ x 6.” It features a 1918 charcoal sketch of Udet from the neck up, showcasing his Pour le Mérite (PLM) at his neck and his schirmütze. Udet's distinct pencil signature (E. Udet) adds immense value.

On the reverse, a pencilled description details how the signature was acquired at a Berlin Diplomatic Club during a 1929 luncheon, adding significant historical context.

Significance:

Udet signatures are rare and highly sought after by collectors. This postcard is a fine item, capturing the essence of one of Germany's most notable pilots and his contributions to aviation history.
