This impressive Imperial German pewter drinking cup dates to 1903 and commemorates a military event or service in Hanover involving the Garnison-Schützen Korps (Garrison Rifle Corps). The cup's detailed and raised decoration showcases both exceptional craftsmanship and strong national symbolism tied to the Kingdom of Württemberg within the German Empire.
One side prominently features a high-relief depiction of Duke Albrecht of Württemberg in uniform, surrounded by an ornate floral rococo-style frame. Above the portrait, engraved in script, is the inscription:
"Garn.-Schütz. Korps – Hannover 1903" — indicating this piece was likely created as a commemorative or presentation item.
The opposite side is equally dramatic, displaying a crowned Württemberg coat of arms supported by two bearded wild men, known as “wilden Männer”, traditional heraldic figures of strength and protection. Beneath the arms is a scroll and medal with floral embellishment.
The interior base of the cup bears a maker’s mark:
"GES. GESCH. – HUTZLER", denoting a registered design (Gesetzlich Geschützt – legally protected) and attributed to a known pewter manufacturer active during the early 20th century.
Condition:
The cup shows signs of its age, including minor oxidation and wear, with a few edge chips and dents around the rim and base, all consistent with a pewter item over 120 years old. The engraved script remains legible and adds important provenance.
Dimensions: Approx. 5.25 in. tall (13.3 cm)
Historical Note:
This drinking vessel was produced at the height of the German Empire and offers fascinating insight into regional pride and the role of the military in civic identity. Württemberg, while part of the Empire, maintained a strong royal presence and distinct heraldry. The presence of Duke Albrecht (1865–1939), a high-ranking general and cousin to Kaiser Wilhelm II, reflects the significance of Hanover’s military culture at the time.
Display Suggestion:
Perfect for display alongside other regimental items, Kaiserreich military memorabilia, or pewterware collections. Its dual-sided design and heraldic detail make it an ideal centerpiece in any Imperial German ensemble.
