This is a solid example of the German Seitengewehr 98 (S98) bayonet, a long-model blade originally issued to fit the Gewehr 98 Mauser rifle. Designed in the 1890s and in use through the First World War, the S98 was Germany’s standard long bayonet before the widespread adoption of the S84/98.

This particular specimen measures approximately 26.5 inches overall and remains in very good condition for its age. The blade retains much of its original polish with some light freckling and finish wear consistent with age. The fuller runs nearly the length of the blade, and no maker's mark is visible on the ricasso—typical of some wartime and pre-war examples.

The hilt features wood grip panels with diagonally grooved relief and steel pommel and guard. The steel surfaces show honest age patina and light oxidation, but no active corrosion. The bayonet's press-stud mechanism appears complete, and the mortise slot is intact.

The included scabbard is a standard steel-mounted black leather type with matching age toning and no severe dents or cracking. The throat piece and frog stud are both intact, and the scabbard fits the bayonet snugly. The reverse of the throat piece bears a small stamped heart or unit mark, which may indicate regimental assignment or depot inventory.

While this bayonet does not bear a regimental unit marking, its form and materials are consistent with early-production Imperial German models.

Condition:

  • Blade: Polished with minor spotting, no chips or bends

  • Grip: Wood panels intact, light handling wear

  • Hilt: Patinated steel surfaces, functional press-stud

  • Scabbard: Leather shows surface wrinkling but is structurally strong

Historical Context:
The S98 bayonet was issued widely before and during World War I. The long blade was intended to compensate for the relatively short reach of the Mauser 98 rifle in bayonet combat. These early-model bayonets were gradually phased out in favor of more compact models as trench warfare rendered long blades cumbersome.
