This is a circular brass tobacco or snuff box featuring a boldly embossed “GOTT MIT UNS” (God With Us) imperial crown emblem affixed to the lid. The centerpiece is a highly detailed, domed rendition of the Prussian line infantry belt buckle design, with oak leaf and laurel wreath border, surmounted by the crowned Prussian orb. The motto “GOTT MIT UNS” was widely used by the Imperial German Army from the mid-19th century through World War I and symbolized both monarchic loyalty and divine right.

The body of the box is composed of sturdy sheet brass with warm, aged patina. The lid is pressure-fit and lifts off cleanly. The underside of the lid is smoothly finished with a fine inner beaded edge, and the interior is undivided and left in a natural brass tone. Measuring approximately 2.25 inches in diameter and 1 inch in height, the box would have been sized appropriately for personal tobacco or snuff use and easily stored in a tunic pocket or travel bag.

Condition:
Condition: Very good. The surface shows even patination and light handling wear, lending the piece an authentic field-used appearance. The relief motif remains crisp with strong detail to the crown, wreath, and lettering. The lid fits snugly and cleanly. No dents, deep scratches, or structural flaws are visible.

Historical Context:
The Gott mit uns motto dates back to the Teutonic Knights and was famously adopted by Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV in the 19th century. It adorned the belt buckles, pickelhauben plates, and ceremonial items of the Imperial German Army, and became one of the most recognizable emblems of the Kaiserreich. This box likely dates from the 1880s to early 1900s and would have been privately purchased or gifted, possibly by a fellow soldier, officer, or family member.

Such personal effects were often retained by soldiers through campaigns and long after discharge as keepsakes of service or expressions of national pride. The lid design mirrors that of the standard issue Prussian enlisted buckle, making it an appealing cross-category collectible for both militaria and antique tobacco accessory enthusiasts.

Display Suggestions:
This compact and elegant piece would make an excellent companion display item beside a Prussian enlisted buckle, pickelhaube, or trench art. It also pairs well with other personal effects such as lighters, cigarette cases, or shaving kits from the pre-WWI or WWI German soldier’s kit.

Provenance:
From a private European collection of Imperial-era German soldier’s gear. No additional markings or inscriptions are present.
