This is an original Imperial German Iron Cross 2nd Class (EK II) medal ribbon bar, worn by veterans and officers on their tunics in place of the full decoration. The ribbon displays the distinctive black-white-black configuration of the Prussian Iron Cross, measuring approximately 25mm wide. The ribbed silk retains good color with some mild age toning, fraying at the ends, and slight wear from period use — all consistent with authentic service wear.
The reverse features the correct gilt-colored metal backing plate with functional pin and catch assembly, allowing the ribbon bar to be worn on the tunic. An additional suspension ring is visible, indicating it may have been intended to mount another small award device. The overall construction is textbook for Imperial German ribbon bars of the pre- and wartime period.
Historical Context:
Instituted in 1813 by King Friedrich Wilhelm III, the Iron Cross was reauthorized in 1870 and again in 1914 during the Great War. It quickly became the most recognized German decoration for bravery and merit, awarded across all ranks. Officers and NCOs commonly wore these single-position ribbon bars on their field and service uniforms, offering a practical alternative to the full medal.
Condition:
-
Ribbon shows fraying and toning, but retains strong color.
-
Metal backing plate with age patina.
-
Pin and catch intact and functional.
-
Honest wear, no repairs or modern alterations.
This is a solid and original example of a Prussian Iron Cross 2nd Class ribbon bar, ideal for completing a tunic display or enhancing a medal collection.
